Rock Hit Your Truck’s Windshield? Information to Help You

If you are driving down the road and a rock hit your truck's windshield, you should not ignore this. If so, you may end up paying much more money in repairs or you could end up with a completely new windshield. Below is information about damage to your truck's glass so you will know what you should do.

Repair Rock Chips ASAP

Of you have a chip on your windshield that was caused by the rock, you need to take your truck to a mechanic immediately. This is because a chip can quickly turn into a full-on crack very quickly. The chip may also stay small for a long time but then turn into a crack later. No matter what you do, this chip will end up turning to a crack. Once you see a crack it will spread across your windshield and more may appear. You will likely end up with a windshield that is mostly covered in cracks over a period of time.

Pay Attention to Weather and Temperature

If you live in an area that has extremely cold temperatures, this cold air can cause the chip to easily turn into a crack. For example, when you have a lot of ice built up you would turn on the defrost with warm air running on your windshield. This warm air will change the temperature of the glass quickly from the interior. A sudden change in temperature outside can also cause the chip to crack.

The same thing goes if you live in extreme heat. For example, your windshield will be hot and then you will turn on the air conditioner which will cool the temperature of the windshield.

Use Professional or DIY Repair

In some cases, you can repair a chip on your own. This is only if the chip is very small and does not indent the glass far. You can purchase kits at automotive parts stores in order to repair the chip. The kit will come with everything that you need.

If the chip on your truck's windshield is large or is very deep, you need to hire a truck glass service to do this repair for you. If you did try this on your own, you could end up making the chip much worse. In most cases, a professional can repair the chip. If a crack has already started to appear, however, the truck glass services may suggest that you replace your windshield.
